How well is your employer managing your 401(k) plan?
Article Abstract:
Management accountants and financial managers need to make sure that their firms' 401(k) investment plans are in compliance with government regulations and fiduciary responsibility statutes embodied in the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. They are urged to review various financial management and investment-related issues such as recordkeeping, plan trust services and product performance concerns. Moreover, they should consider some of the difficulties associated with 401(k) plans. These include the review of plan expenses, investment policies and guidelines, plan sponsorships, asset selection, and participant education programs. Companies are suggested to allocate time and resources for an annual review program of the 401(k) investments.

The new breed
Article Abstract:
More and more companies are hiring hybrid finance/information technology (IT) managers to develop and run their financial systems. These individuals possess financial, accounting and IT skills and often report to both the finance and IT departments. Hiring these managers offers several benefits to companies which include the faster development of business solutions due to their knowledge of business and IT, and the development of solutions that address the needs of specific departments. The advent of hybrid managers has also given rise to online analytical processing technologies which help these managers perform their multidimensional tasks. The responsibilities of four hybrid managers are discussed.
