Firm asymmetries and sequential R&D: theory and evidence from the mainframe computer industry
Article Abstract:
The R&D process is modeled as an activity comprising a series of stages. A set of product characteristics are determined at each stage. Game-theoretic factors are incorporated into analyzing the method of allocating R&D resources at each stage. The concept of system complexity is formalized to tackle issues brought up by products that are formed by interacting components and subsystems. Theoretical implications are tested on a sample of R&D projects managed in firms involved in mainframe computer development. The model explicitly shows that scarce R&D resources lead to a tradeoff between the aggressiveness of product characteristics at each stage and the speed with which each stage is completed.

An interactive decomposable heuristic for project selection
Article Abstract:
A decomposable 0-1 integer programming technique and a heuristic model are employed to explain project selection and funding in a hierarchical technology-oriented organization. The algorithm successfully models multi-echelon information and decision-making flows, and can be applied to production and financial management problems. It is especially helpful in modeling divergent viewpoints created by managerial personnel interaction.
