Florida smoking rule upheld

The Supreme Court ruled on Jan 8, 1996, against Arlene Kurtz, in her appeal of a North Miami, FL, law banning the hiring of smokers. Kurtz was rejected for a city clerk-typist position because she was a smoker. The city contended that higher medical costs for smokers justified the law.

1990 census count upheld
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruled on Mar 20, 1996, in 'Wisconsin v. City of New York' that 1990 census does not have to be amended, despite undercounts of minorities. The Court ruled that then Commerce Secretary Robert S Mosbacher had full authority to decide census issues.

Sentence increases for perjury upheld

The Supreme Court, in US versus Dunnigan, ruled on Feb 23, 1993, that a sentence of a convicted individual could be increased if that person committed perjury during the trial.
