For stay-home workers, speed bumps on the telecommute
Article Abstract:
A 1996 study by Olsten Corporation shows that 42% of companies provide telecommuting facilities to their employees, but only 7% of employees telecommute. A sociology professor and author of the book 'Transition to Telecommuting,' explains that the reasons are due to unrealistic expectation of employees and the fear of employers to lose control. Another study by IDC/Link estimates that there are 32.7 million people who work at home and the number is projected to grow at the rate of 8.2% a year to 2001 and beyond. However, the study, includes part-time workers, self-employed contractors and people who bring work home. Those who advocate telecommuting agree with the estimate, while others disagree. The president of the Institute for Distributed Computing believes that there have been no clear and random sampling of telecommuters. According to him there are 9 to 14 million US workers who work from home on a regular basis, 12 to 16 million independent contractors and 10 to 12 million, who run home businesses.

Article Abstract:
The book 'The Lynching of Cleo Wright' by Dominic J. Capeci, Jr. describes the horrible lynching and death by fire of an African American man in Sikeston, MO, in 1942. The man was accused of attacking a woman, and was taken out of the jail after his arrest the same night. Not much has changed socially since that fateful night in the town. Fortunately, another lynching has not occurred either.
