Ford Motor Co. posted $2.38 billion in earnings for the second-quarter of 1998. The earnings were better than what analysts predicted. However, they were still 5.9% below compared to the same period in 1997. In 1997, Ford was greatly aided by earnings from the spun-off Associates First Capital. Investors have been anticipating dramatic action at GM for many years. Mr. Smith opposed analysts' calls to spin off GM's Hughes Electronics unit. Despite Mr. Smith's comments, the idea that GM would take action to increase shareholder value led to a rise in the company's stock price.
