GM commits to aluminum in Alcan pact
Article Abstract:
Alcan Aluminium Ltd. and General Motors have made an 10-year, multibillion-dollar deal that involves using more aluminum in the making of GM cars. Currently, GM uses about 210 pounds per vehicle and spends more than $1 billion for the metal per year. This agreement will provide GM with about one-fourth its aluminum needs; Alcan says GM will buy about 10% of the aluminum it sells. More aluminum will be used in each model year as the best way to improve emissions and air quality. Ford's Lincoln LS sedans reportedly use 261 pounds of aluminum. Each car still consists of roughly 55% steel.
