GM moves to open its Corvett plant as arbitration opens on UAW strikes
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. announced its intentions to open its Corvette plant in Bowling Green, KY, and use parts from new alternative sources. The move is expected to increase the likelihood of still another strike compounded by the walkouts by 9,200 employees at two parts plants in Flint, MI. With the company's production of highly profitable pickup trucks at a stand still, officials are still looking for alternative sources of parts to restart the pickup plants. The union is still talking with GM for a local working agreement. It is believed by the local union that the copmany is restarting the plant using parts domestically acquired but made in nonunion facilities.

Judge prods GM and UAW into arbitration
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. (GM) and the United Auto Workers (UAW) were persuaded into bringing their cases to arbitration by a federal district judge. Both sides are disputing over whether or not GM's five-week labor strikes are in violation of the GM-UAW labor contract. GM wanted Judge Paul Gadola to order the UAW to enter into immediate arbitration. The car maker is hoping that arbitration will lead to an end to the strikes.
