Nintendo Co. is introducing 2 new versions of its video games, Game Boy Advance and GameCube, a box and a hand-held machine that will offer the usual games and connect players via the World Wide Web. In a fierce competition with Sony and Microsoft in the $20-billion game market, Nintendo is offering products are easy for developers to work with, as opposed to Sony's PlayStation 2, which is difficult to write software for. GameCube will pack a modem and a 128-bit, 400-megahertz IBM processor. The Game Boy Advance has a large color screen with a cellular phone port, on sale next spring for about $92.

Sega Corp. has decided to discontinue production of its Dreamcast video game player and to concentrate its efforts on designing video game software programs. The race for market share in the video game console arena is heating up between Sony Corp., Nintendo and Microsoft, which will introduce its Xbox console later in 2001. Sony has difficulties of its own as users are unhappy with the complexity and availability of its highly-touted PlayStation 2 console.

Both companies are facing a slowing US economy and Sony Corp.'s current lead in the market with its PlayStation 2. Market-share success will come to the company able to produce enough machines to meet customer demand. Microsoft is somewhat hampered by its limited hardware experience.
