A sudden wrinkle in time carries Tandem's computers back to 1983
Article Abstract:
A glitch in the software for Tandem Computer Inc's NonStop CLX turned the minicomputer's clock back nearly ten years. Whenever the local time was 3 pm, Dec 1, 1992, the NonStop would change back to Nov 1, 1983. This caused all sorts of problems with programs that rely on the internal clock for making calculations. Tandem advised users to reset the clock by turning off their computer: an embarrassing move for a product called the 'NonStop.' Tandem dominates the market for fault-tolerant computers, which have built-in redundancies that mean that they should never have to be turned off. Tandem says the bug only afflicted five-year-old NonStop CLXs, not a newer version that began selling in 1991. The bug is scheduled to strike again in the year 2001 if it is not corrected by then.

Next Inc., citing its workstation sales, posts first quarterly operating profit
Article Abstract:
Next Computer Inc reported a 4th qtr FY 1992 operating profit of a little less than $1 million on $45 million in sales. Next Pres and COO Peter van Cuylenburg credits the profit, the firm's first-ever, to greater emphasis on direct sales to corporations. Workstation manufacturers have been hurt by falling prices even as performance of the machines increases dramatically. The competitive hardware market is leading Next to emphasize its more-profitable software business. Next hopes to maintain its recent success with the debut of a version of its NextStep operating system for Intel 80486-based microcomputers. Cuylenburg would not comment on whether Next plans to phase out its hardware products.
