Rite Aid to buy Lilly business for $1.5 billion

Rite Aid will become only the third major pharmaceutical chain to get into the benefit-management business when it buys PCS from Eli Lilly for $1.5 billion. Lilly bought the unit from McKesson in 1994 for over $4 billion. PCS handles almost 300 million prescriptions for its 56 million members. Other recent Rite Aid acquisitions have been Thrifty Payless, Harco and K&B.

Allied Waste to buy Browning-Ferris for cash
Article Abstract:
Allied Waste Industries Inc. will buy BFI in a cash deal valued at about $7.3 billion. The Scottsdale-based Allied is only one-third the size of its acquisition, Houston-based Browning-Ferris Industries Inc. Together they will be a stronger competitor against No. 1 Waste Management. Plans are to cut operating expenses and to sell off assets.
