Government remorseful for war acts

Japan issued a declaration on Jun 6, 1995, expressing remorse for the acts of aggression it committed during World War II. However, it did not issue a full apology. Premier Tomiichi Murayama was the main backer of the resolution, but many members of the Liberal Democratic Party opposed it.

Simitis government takes office
Article Abstract:
The ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement selected Simitis to replace the ailing Premier Andreas Papandreou, and Simitis took office on Jan 22, 1996. In a speech before the Greek parliament, he vowed to curb inflation, reduce the deficit and improve relations with the US.
