New PC printers take on market for home photos
Article Abstract:
Rapid quality improvement of color computer printer technology has enabled inexpensive home printers to output images that rival those produced by traditional film processing services. The computer-generated images may lack the longevity of traditional prints, however. Computer printing is also extremely slow, requiring up to 10 minutes to print a single 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. Early leaders in photographic quality consumer printers are Canon, with a line priced between $179 and $499; Seiko Epson, with a $279 machine; and, HP, which plans to produce a printer designed to handle thick, glossy paper similar to traditional photographic paper. Many photo processing businesses offer digital output from film negatives, and the new technology could initially benefit the traditional film industry.

H-P to create a new subsidiary to sell cheap 'Apollo' brand of ink-jet printers
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard will create its first subsidiary company, Apollo Consumer Products Inc., to sell ink-jet printers that cost under $100. The Apollo printers will most likely be manufactured and sold through outsourced channels; the new company will have only 10 employees. The perceived risk is that the low-end product(s) could have a negative impact on the image of H-P, maker of high-end, not discount, products.
