This fall, ladies' handbags are getting carried away

Cartier Inc., Fendi, Chanel and Moschino are some of the ladies' handbags manufacturers that are coming out with novelty purses to attract big spenders to their high-priced products. Industry analysts have said that the new purses, which are selling from $250 to over $3,000, already have resulted in the creation of a waiting list of porspective buyers who are eager to make a splash in the fall 1998 fashion season. Women's handbags sales in the United States reached sales of $4.4 billion in 1997.

Adrienne Vittadini announced her resignation as chairman and chief designer of the Vittadini fashion line. Ms. Vittadini founded the line in 1979. Many career women were attracted to the Vittadini knitwear line. These women favored the line's tunic tops and pull-on skirts and pants. However, the line has been pushed aside by competitors like Polo Ralph Lauren Corp.'s Lauren women's line and Tommy Hilfiger's women's apparel products.

Tag Heuer will sponsor a public photo exhibit by Peter Lindbergh as part of a $12 mil campaign created by Bartle Bogle Hegarty to promote its Link watch. The Swiss company had sales of $300 mil per year through the 1990's. Its watches sell for between $600 and $3,000. Timex, which sells most of its watches for under $60, claims a third of the U.S. market.
