Here come the ink-jet printers, again
Article Abstract:
HP's Deskjet 722C and 890Cse are excellent ink-jet printers for users who print mostly text and can overlook some photo output imperfections. The printers cost around $450 and $350 respectively. Among the 890's features are slightly faster printing, more paper capacity, compatibility with DOS programs and computer networks, and a better range of software. The Deskjet 722C is an extremely quiet printer that can handle banners in addition to paper, transparencies and iron-on transfers. Both printers maintain HP's credibility in producing quality text, especially on special papers. Drawbacks include sluggish print drivers and wet ink problems. Canon Computer Systems' BJC-7000, around $450, can produce good results after asking users to switch to a special cartridge that prints photographic images. A downside is taking 22 minutes to finish printing a full-page photo. Lexmark International's Lexmark 7200, around $400, prints quickly and efficiently on plain paper, except for streaks at high speed. Reproducing the bottom edges of photos produces omissions and extraneous dots.

Banner days seen for ink-jet printers
Article Abstract:
HP's $330 DeskJet 682C and 680C color ink jet printers offer outstanding print quality as well as the ability to handle continuous-feed paper, while the $420 DeskJet offers fast printing but cannot accept a continuous feed. The 682C creates a page in 20 seconds in 'normal' mode and takes about a minute in the 'best' mode. The 'econfast' setting produces a legible if lightly printed page in 12 seconds. The 682C produces black printing that rivals the quality of laser printers. The 680C offers similar capabilities for the Macintosh platform and lacks the extra software bundled with the Windows version 682C. Neither of the 680s can print to the edge of an envelope or page, and they do not come with the cable required to connect them to the PC. The 820Cse prints color better than the 680s, and its text is slightly clearer. It is twice as fast, and its ink cartridges cost approximately 25% less per page.

Ink-jet printers that function as photofinishers
Article Abstract:
Recent technological advances have improved the way color inkjet printers print photographs. These printers are fairly slow, but they produce excellent text quality output. The $340 HP Deskjet 693C and $280 Canon BJC-4200 are excellent inkjet printers and both offer a $50 photo color kit for printing photographs. The kits include a special ink cartridge and special photographic paper. The cartridges do not last long, particularly when used to print large color pictures. The Canon printer will print 16 8-by-10 photos per cartridge, a cost of about $2.66 per photo. The HP photos have the gloss and appearance of traditional photos, but the resolution is not as good. Canon's photo quality is better, but its paper does not give the appearance of high-quality photos. Canon bundles two CDs full of graphics software with its printer, but the software is difficult to install.
