Heuristics for pricing and positioning a product-line using conjoint and cost data
Article Abstract:
Product-line design and pricing is attempted using conjoint analysis. This method is a quantitative technique for measuring product profile preferences and building market simulations. The problem involves a mathematical program in which the firm's objective is profit or welfare, and each product profile has fixed and variable costs and is endogenously introduced. The maximum welfare problem is equal to the uncapacitated plant location problem when it is NP-complete. In this case, boththe welfare and profit problems can be solved using the new greedy exchange heuristics developed. Optimal solutions for both are obtained in a matter of seconds and are shown to perform better than alternative heuristics. Application of the proposed methodology is illustrated using existing products from both the firm and its competitor.

The timing of competitive market entry: an exploratory study of new industrial products?
Article Abstract:
A group of propositions are presented related to determining when to introduce a new product to market based on a review of the extant literature on the subject. The propositions are then tested empirically to examine the connection between the likelihood of successful results for novel industrial products and the selected market entry time.

A market entry timing model for new technologies
Article Abstract:
A main issue for the development and planning of new products is the entry decision-market entry. A diffusion model is given that is based on negative word-of-mouth related to new product defects and failures, caused by premature entry. The examination is made of the problem that confronts the Department of Energy's photovoltaic program.
