House scales back Clean Water Act
Article Abstract:
The House approved a bill that would reduce environmental water regulation under the 1972 Clean Water Act. The bill allows states more water regulation authority and reduces federal restrictions against businesses and cities dumping pollution into waterways. It also decreases wetland protection.

Chernobyl fire spreads atomic ash
Article Abstract:
On the eve of the candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the Apr 26, 1986 Chernobyl nuclear energy plant disaster, a forest fire spread radioactive dust in nearby Tovstiy Lis, Ukraine. Safety continues to be a problem at the nuclear energy plant, which will close in 2000.

Atomic bomb exhibit scaled back
Article Abstract:
A Smithsonian Institution exhibit of the Enola Gay and the atomic bombings in Japan was scaled back after veterans and politicians criticized the plans. The exhibit was revised previously after other groups charged it was too sympathetic to the Japanese.
