How Xerox sustains the cost of quality
Article Abstract:
Xerox US Marketing Group has successfully introduced and maintained a cost of quality program. From 1989 to 1992, the division was able to save over $200 million as a result of the cost of quality program, even in the face of business pressures and organizational troubles that could have affected the quality initiative. The program entailed the cooperation of multifunctional empowered teams, who were asked to report cost-savings opportunities in different business processes throughout the division. Extensive training was provided to enable employees and managers to make their contributions to the program, which was sustained by asking for more suggestions. The culture of the division and the company was highly oriented to quality so it was not that difficult soliciting for the support of everyone. The strong support of management toward the effort also helped significantly to sustain the program.
