IBM announces new product line of disk drives
Article Abstract:
IBM announces it will begin shipping its delayed high-end disk drive on Dec 1, 1989. The drives can hold 22.7Gbytes of information, three times as much as current disk drives. The time needed to find data is cut to 12.5 milliseconds and the rate at which data can be pulled off a disk is increased by 40 percent, to 4.2 megabytes per second. Drives account for about 10 percent of IBM's revenues, and their previous delay hurt 3rd qtr 1989 earnings. Though analysts are optimistic that the new release will help boost IBM's revenues, they worry about customer concerns with IBM product reliability. IBM claims its memory prices have been lowered by 18 percent, but analysts say the reduction is actually 6 to 10 percent.

New IBM workstation line aims for credibility
Article Abstract:
IBM will introduce the RS/6000, an impressive line of workstations, on Thursday, Feb 15, 1990. Industry executives say it means IBM will become a credible competitor in the workstation market. Industry observers say that IBM's reduced-instruction-set computing machines are faster than competitors' products; they say, too, that IBM has made a good start at making application software available on the machines. At the same time, observers caution that it will take time - at least a year, they say - before IBM's new products make much of a difference in the market.
