IBM is expected to unveil PCs in October that compete with Compaq file servers
Article Abstract:
Industry analysts expect IBM to enter the Intel 80486-based file server market in 1990 with at least two new models of the new PS/2 95 microcomputer. IBM hopes to compete with Compaq's Systempro 486 file server and similar products from AT&T and NetFrame Systems Inc. This is IBM's first use of the Intel 80486 chip but the files servers are not expected to be the super servers IBM demonstrates at trade shows. The two file servers IBM currently sells are based on 80386 and 80386SX chips and do not compete in the higher end of the market, which Compaq dominates. IBM indicates the new files servers use high-speed input-output technology, drives with storage capacities of up to 2.3Gbytes and a new color graphics display standard called the Extended Graphics Array (XGA). Analysts believe these features and a strong commitment by IBM to network file servers are necessary for IBM to gain a significant market share.

VDTs are said not to increase miscarriage risk
Article Abstract:
The US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reports that working long hours in front of a video display terminal (VDT) does not increase the risk of miscarriage for pregnant women. The research group compared the miscarriage rates of two groups: telephone operators using VDTs and those not using VDTs. The miscarriage rate in the first three months was 15 percent for VDT users and 16 percent for non-VDT users, a statistically insignificant difference. The study was based on 882 pregnancies. The research group attributes higher miscarriage rates to smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day or consuming more than eight alcoholic beverages a month.

IBM to reduce radiation from future VDT models
Article Abstract:
IBM will respond to customer concerns by reducing electromagnetic fields emitted by the company's video display terminal (VDT) products. The computer company adds that it believes its current VDT models are safe and has no plans to retrofit millions of units already in use. IBM's move is announced amid increasing concern about electromagnetic fields emitted by all sorts of electric and electronic devices and machinery, ranging from power lines to radar installations.
