Computer firms had better 3rd quarter

IBM expects third quarter revenues to better last year's comparable period results by 9%. or $1.08 earnings per share. For the same measure, Hewlett Packard Co. should top 40%, or EPS of $1.03. Compaq expects a 16% increase over last year and a 29 cent EPS. Sun Microsystems should see a rise of 47%, or EPS of 25 cents. Overall analysts see continued demand into at least the next 2 or 3 quarters for the server hardware and services these companies provide.

Most computer makers' results take a hit

Except for International Business Machines Corp., most computer makers are issuing warnings on their first quarters. Hewlett-Packard's second quarter expects 35 center a share downturn. Sun Microsystems will be down about 5 cents a share. Compaq Computer rings it at 13 cents a share; Unisys down 22 cents. NCR expects an increase in earnings to 9 cents a share. IBM bucked the downturn by leaving personal computers for outsourcing its services and selling mainframe servers.
