IBM pulls plug on store sales of its desktops
Article Abstract:
International Business Machines Corp. announced that it will no longer sell its desktop computers in the U.S. through retailers. IBM loses money on every desktop it sells through retail outlets, one insider claims. IBM will still sell laptops in stores and will market its Aptiva consumer PC online. In addition , IBM will keep selling its Aptiva line through retailers in Europe and Asia. IBM's departure from the retail store market represents a defeat after many unsuccessful attempts, dating back to the PCjr which came out in November 1983, to make headway in the market for PCs for individual consumers. By the 1990s, the competition had completely taken the field away from IBM. Some analysts point out that IBM has always had trouble selling consumer PCs because the firm's true focus is on business computers, computer software and computer services.
