IBM sues to silence former employee
Article Abstract:
IBM Corp is suing its former employee, Peter Bonyhard, to prevent him from divulging IBM trade secrets to his new employer, Seagate Technology Inc. Bonyhard, 55, developed magnetoresistive (MR) disk drive heads for IBM before he was hired away by Seagate to do the same job. IBM wants Bonyhard to stay away from MR head projects, claiming there is no way he can do his job at Seagate without revealing IBM's confidential information. In Dec 1992, the US District Court in Minneapolis granted IBM an injunction barring Bonyhard from being involved in Seagate's MR project. Bonyhard, a doctor of physics who fled his native Hungary in 1956, has countersued IBM for interfering with his right to choose a place of work. He says MR-head design is a subject that interests him and in which he excels. Another field would offer him less opportunities and income.

New mainframes fail to generate boom in revenue; analysts say makers of big computers can't rely on old cycles anymore
Article Abstract:
Mainframe revenues may be flat or go through a decline in the second half of FY 1992, despite industry predictions that 1992 would be a strong year for mainframes. Although mainframes are still used for many purposes, manufacturers such as IBM can no longer depend on the machines as a source of good cyclical profits. Analysts predict that the strong surge in mainframe buying that occurred from 1987 through 1990 will never be duplicated. Mainframe manufacturers will have to adapt to the changing market. IBM and Hitachi Ltd are accelerating their advertising campaigns, for example. Companies will also have to focus on researching new technologies and taking steps to maintain their current profit and revenue. The possible future surge in multimedia popularity may boost mainframe sales.
