Improving Product Elimination in Engineering Companies
Article Abstract:
Results of a study of the product elimination decision-making process in the United Kingdom engineering industry are presented. Results indicate that elimination activities are not as important as other product planning activities. Most elimination practices are both unstructured and unsophisticated. Specific responsibility for this task is rarely assigned. Problems involved in the product elimination decision are identified. Implications for management practice are suggested. Top management support is essential. Data inputs should be improved. Responsibility should be assigned. A product review procedure should be established.

Restructuring of R&D organisations and the defence industry in the Russian Federation
Article Abstract:
The impact of diversification in the defense industry and defense-related R&D sector in the former Soviet Union was examined. A case study of the State Science Center vector provided empirical evidence that the restructuring and conversion of the military industry and science in the Russian Federation led to the creation of holding companies called H-forms and multidivisional organizations organized along product lines called M-forms. It was also shown that defense establishments in the Russian Federation which reorganized into M-forms were generally more successful.
