In the battle for allies, Aliant and Alliant are fighting words
Article Abstract:
Lincoln, Nebraska-based telecommunications firm Aliant Communications Inc. is attempting to prevent Interstate Energy Corp., Madison, WI-based utility which does business as Alliant Corp., from changing its name to Alliant. Aliant Communications is suing Interstate Energy in a federal court in Des Moines, where US District Judge Charles Wolle temporarily suspended Interstate's usage of the name Alliant in its advertising. While the name Alliant is a common one among many types of businesses, Aliant Communications says that in this case both companies would be serving the same customers in the same channels of trade.

Expansion is set by Dominion Resources Inc

Telebras wards off competition
Article Abstract:
Telecomunicacoes Brasileiros SA (Telebras) is providing strong competition for new telecommunications firms in some Brazilian markets. Telebras subsidiaries are performing well in states like Brasilia and Minas Gerais. The company's ability to offer strong competition shows that although Telebras is not posting high profits, it can remain a powerful presence in the market. Twelve pieces of Telebras will be privatized on July 29, 1998 for at least $12 billion.
