Motorola unveils a major reorganization

Motorola Inc. introduced major organization changes that will effect two-thirds of its corporate empire. The changes are intended to shift Motorola's focus to its key communications markets. The reorganization will have a major impact on the company's cellular telephone, wireless networks, and pagers businesses. These businesses make up approximately $22 billion of Motorola's 1997 sales, which were $28.9 billion.

Motorola, IBM to end alliance on design of power PC chip line

International Business Machines Corp. and Schaumburg, IL-based Motorola Inc. are dissolving their alliance to design Power PC microprocessor chips. The alliance was once seen as competition for Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Motorola said that it will take full ownership of the Somerset PowerPC microprocessor design center in Austin, TX.
