Intelligent Computers: Now the U.S. Leaps into a Race with the Japanese
Article Abstract:
A $600 million government program designed to keep the United States ahead of Japan in the development of an intelligent computer is described. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is heading the effort, has awarded three million dollars to Thinking Machines Corporation of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and twenty-three million dollars to Carnegie-Mellon and Columbia Universities as its initial step. DARPA's plans and objectives and the technological challenge presented by the program are explained. Japan's $400 million parallel project and the lack of technological breakthroughs to date are discussed. A cartoon depicts the developmental efforts of the United States and Japan.
