Intel's new chip may bring only a small dose of relief
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp.is introducing its new Pentium II Xeon chip. Priced at $1,100 to $2,800, the new chip is especially suited for server machines that use multiple microprocessors to match the power of large mainframe systems. Price wars, slowing sales growth and stiffer competition have stunted Intel's revenue in the last few years, but with the introduction of the Xeon chip, the company hopes to move into a high-end arena with larger profit margins. The higher margin processor, however is not expected to be met with the same demand as Intel's lower-end products.

Showdown looms over a chip giants power
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. has been accused of attempting to influence a Hollywood special effects business not to use a competitor's computers for the movie "Godzilla". Some customers and competitors view Intel Corp. as Godzilla. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is expected to announce imminently if it plans to bring anti-trust charges against the company. The Intel case focusses attention on the principle of whether a company can legally use information to benefit its friends and hinder its enemies.

Intel will extend popular chip line, hedging bet on radical new technology
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. announced new chip architecture, which processes data in 64-bit chunks rather than 32 bits used in most current chips. The new technology will first be used in Merced, which is the code name for an Intel chip targeted for high end workstation and server machines. The company said it will also introduce a microprocessor called Foster that can run current 32-bit software faster than Merced. Foster will extend the future of Intel's widely used x86 line.
