Investors hold back in rally

Asian investors have not been investing in Asian stock mutual funds despite the rally in Asian stockmarkets since the beginning of 1998. Asian mutual fund managers report that most Asian investors are putting their capital in non-Asian vehicles. Visa Capital Management Asian Operations chief Joseph Lam reports that Asian investment in Asian stock mutual funds has dropped from the normal level of 60% of net sales to the region of 5% to 6%.

Demand for global shares too tempting for Fidelity to stay away again

Bankers Trust Australia controls a large share of the Australian retail market for international equities. After entering the Australian market in the 1980s, US-based Fidelity sold its retail operations to Perpetual Funds Management (PFM) in 1993. Now Fidelity and PFM have signed an agreement to handle the retail market for global investments and compete with Bankers Trust for market share.

Soros hunts for bargains

Financier George Soros is hunting for bargains in Asia now that the economic turmoil has led to the collapse of regional stockmarkets. Soros controls hedge fund with billions of dollars worth of capital. Ironically, some Asian countries have accused Soros of having engineered the economic crisis that has created the very bargains Soros seeks.
