Service industries in Australia expect to raise prices about 10% because of the goods & service tax that takes effect on July 1, 2000. Companies may try to lower costs to limit this increase, but fixed expenses, such as salaries, must be maintained. The removal of the wholesale tax should mitigate somewhat the rise in prices.

Australia's goods and services tax (GST), set to be introduced in July 2000, could destroy up to 10% of the small business sector. Marsha Thomson, Victoria's Minister for Small Business, says the sector has not received enough time to ready itself for GST.
