Kroger to buy Fred Meyer, creating country's biggest grocer
Article Abstract:
The Kroger Co. announced its agreement to acquire Fred Meyer, Inc., which will put the combined company on top in annual sales. The new company will go under the Kroger name, however, individual stores will keep either their Kroger name, mostly east of the Rockies, and the Fred Meyer store name, mostly west of the Rockies. Together, there are 2,200 stores in 31 states. The price tag is about $8 billion in stock plus debt. Job overlap is thought to be only in office workers, not store employees. A very strong management team comes with Fred Meyer which is still adjusting to other recent acquisitions of its own.
