Leaping centuries in single step, a minimalist goes digital
Article Abstract:
Sony's $500 Mavica FD5 digital camera provides some dramatic color images, according to a pinhole camera photographer who took pictures on the Upper West Side of New York City. Pinhole cameras, which take black-and-white photographs, use primitive equipment and may require exposure times of 7 minutes to 90 minutes. By comparison, the FD5 is a still camera that stores images on standard 3 1/2-inch high-density floppy disks. It takes time to adjust to the FD5's point-and-shoot design plus an inability to select an F-stop or alter the shutter speed. The L.C.D. screen lacks a hood but offers the advantage of playbacks for instant viewing. Drawbacks include difficulty handling indoor shots that contain sharp contrasts in light and dark, as well as complex composition.
