New coal plan reprieves 12 mines

The UK's plan to privatize the coal-mining industry will allow 12 coal mines that were scheduled to be closed to stay open. This plan will cause 5,800 more workers to lose their jobs. All 12 mines are unlikely to stay open an additional year.

House panel clears tax plan
Article Abstract:
The House Ways and Means Committee approved most of the tax increases proposed by Pres Bill Clinton. The tax plan, which is combined with spending cuts and revenue increases, is designed to raise about $246 billion through FY 1998.
