Little EMC challenges leader IBM in data-storage; sales grow on products using cheaper, faster off-the-shelf disk drives
Article Abstract:
IBM is losing some of its $7 million mainframe data-storage business to EMC Corp as consumers turn away from IBM's expensive single-disk drives in favor of products based on the smaller company's faster, cheaper and smaller mass-produced disk drives. EMC's redundant arrays of inexpensive disks (RAIDs) consist of many small, off-the-shelf disks that work together via special software. EMC captured $232 million of the $8.4 billion mainframe disk market in 1991 and the company's net income rose 47 percent to $13 million in the same year. Automatic Data Processing Inc and Delta Air Lines, among others, have converted their systems to EMC products. EMC's current success follows three years of difficulties with quality and service. So far, however, the company's new clients are very satisfied with their products. EMC will face stiff competition should IBM decide to enter the RAID disk market. Storage Technology Corp and Hitachi Ltd are already developing similar products.

Court upholds Data General contract, but house panel will continue probe
Article Abstract:
A federal appeals court upholds the legality of a $127 million computer contract between Data General Corp and the United States Department of the Interior. However, a House Interior subcommittee on oversight claims it has found new information and will continue its investigation of the contract awarding process. New evidence includes a transcript of phone conversations between the Interior Department's contracting officer and Data General that possibly show some irregularities. The contract is seen as critical to Data General's future.
