Lotus net rises 40% on one-time gain while operating earnings plunge 66%
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp reported a 40 percent rise in profit, a 66 percent decline in operating profit and a 5.5 percent decline in sales for 3rd qtr, FY 1992. The company reported a profit of $30.1 million, the equivalent of 72 cents per share, which was due mainly to its having sold shares in Sybase Inc. Without the sale, earnings would have been only $7.3 million, whereas they were $21.5 million in 3rd qtr, FY 1991. For the first time since 4th qtr of FY 1998, Lotus' sales dropped. The company reported $218.8 million in sales. However, the company predicts that its 4th qtr will be stronger, which caused its stock prices to rise in trading on Oct 15, 1992. Lotus said its disappointing results were caused by a decline in international sales, price cuts and the popularity of Microsoft Windows-based software products.
