Article Abstract:
Erosion is occurring in the American machine tool industry. Proponents claim that the industry must be preserved due to political, economical and strategic implications. Machine tool manufacture impacts defense industry, technological advantages and identification of manufacturing needs. The machine tool industry must commit major investments to research and development to remain competitive with foreign imports. The import share of American consumption of machine tools is plotted from 1972 to 1983.

Has Justice Killed Steel Comeback?
Article Abstract:
The Justice Department denied the LTV-Republic Steel merger in February 1984. The industry was making an attempt to streamline in order to compete internationally. However, it is predicted that the industry will become competitive in the future. Firms will specialize rather than offer full product lines. Joint ventures may replace mergers. Companies may sell or trade supplies among themselves. A chart and graphs are provided.

Business Teaches the Three R's
Article Abstract:
Corporations are offering courses in basic skills to train their employees. Math and English must be taught if basic tasks are to be performed. Examples of the courses are given. Training is cheaper than mistakes and retraining and rehiring new people because the others could not function.
