Mandela shoot-to-kill order draws ire

Mandela admitted he gave African National Congress (ANC) guards permission to shoot Inkatha Freedom Party protesters during a demonstration in Mar 1994, but defended the order on self-defense grounds. Eight Inkatha members were killed by ANC guards. Tensions have worsened between the two groups.

U.N envoy to investigate violence

The UN Security Council agreed to send an emissary to investigate violence in the black townships of South Africa and to arrange to restart negotiations to bring about an interracial government. The African National Congress had asked for permanent monitors.
