Mattel forecasts sluggish sales growth as it posts 70% drop in 4th-quarter net
Article Abstract:
Mattel reported a 70% drop in 4th quarter profits due, partly at least, to Barbie's declining popularity. Barbie represents about 25% of Mattel's business and Barbie sales were down 14% in 1998. The company projects Barbie's 40th anniversary to help sales, but is being much more cautious about predictions of late. It's Online business did well in 1998, increasing 25% to $100 million. The toymaker is still in the process of acquiring Learning Co. but then is expected to make reorganizational moves to help offset losses.

San Diego may flush now, drink later
Article Abstract:
The repurification of sewage as a readily available source of drinking water is an idea whose time has come for the leaders of the city of San Diego. But the city's thirsty residents have not been convinced, prompting a new high-profile marketing campaign which was designed to promote the plan's benefits, such as cost savings. The city has hired a public relations firm and set up a hot line to sell the idea to the public before starting construction on the $2 million waster-water recycling plant.
