McCaw to alter phone network for computers
Article Abstract:
McCaw Cellular Communications will announce plans to enhance its telephone network to carry computerized information more efficiently. IBM will assist in the enterprise. McCaw is the largest cellular communications carrier in the US and has been seeking a way to give portable computer users a method to transmit data among themselves and to their home offices. The existing McCaw network is poorly equipped for managing data transmission, which requires more precision than voice transmission. Details of the arrangement were not available. The move by McCaw and IBM, according to industry observers is seen as the latest sign that interest in mobile data networks is growing.

Oracle and McCaw to broadcast data to computers on airwaves
Article Abstract:
Oracle Corp, Redwood Shores, CA; which makes database software, and McCaw Cellular Inc, Kirkland, WA; the cellular telephone company, will combine to test a new arrangement for broadcasting data via cellular networks. The test will take place in the Seattle area. Data would include financial reports, stock quotes, information about airline flights, newsletters, reference information, or computer programs. Office and mobile workers are the targetted market. The Oracle-McCaw wireless data-distribution arrangement is envisioned as a more economical way to distribute data than via traditional telephone services.
