Agency dealt blow on rules for messaging
Article Abstract:
The US Computer System Security and Privacy Advisory Board recommends that the US Department of Commerce delay until Jun 1993 adoption of an electronic message verification standard. In 1991 the US National Institute of Standards and Technology proposed the digital signatures standard, but the advisory board expressed doubts about the standard, citing lack of an overall governmental encryption protocol among its objections. The use of digital signatures provides security against computer viruses, as well as increasing confidence in electronically transmitted documents. The lack of a means to positively identify users has prevented the spread of electronic messaging, and made online transactions more difficult. Microsoft Corp and Apple support an alternative standard, and Apple says that its microcomputers will ship with data codes developed by RSA Data Security Inc by the end of 1992.

Personal-computer makers join forces in move to prevent tampering, forgery
Article Abstract:
Several companies in the computer industry are considering using security technology from RSA Data Security Inc. RSA's approach to protecting documents involves attaching digital signatures to electronic messages and making it impossible to alter those messages. RSA pioneered security technology when it began developing 'public key.' Public key technology assigns a secret key, or code, and a public key, which is published in a directory, to every user. The two keys are linked through a mathematical formula: senders use the public key and recipients use their secret key. Industry observers note that the technology is important in the commercial marketplace because of an increasing need for data security.
