McDonnell Douglas is close to selling unit to GM's EDS
Article Abstract:
McDonnell Douglas Corp is close to selling its Systems Integration Co unit to General Motors Corp division Electronic Data Systems Corp. McDonnell Douglas is currently about $2.94 billion in debt and has suffered weak earnings, forcing it to sell assets that are not directly related to the aerospace industry. Systems Integration Co specializes in computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM), and McDonnell Douglas uses their Unigraphics system to design airplanes. Company analysts believe that McDonnell Douglas will be pleased with an offer of $225 million to $350 million for SIC. The company grossed nearly $400 million globally in 1990. Other companies besides Electronic Data Systems have indicated they are interested in SIC, but their offers include having McDonnell Douglas retain an equity interest in the company, which makes them less attractive to McDonnell.

Software Toolworks' recent purchase brings licensing pact with Nintendo
Article Abstract:
Software Toolworks Inc acquires Mindscape Inc in a $40 million deal. This acquisition brings with it a licensing arrangement to design game cartridges for Nintendo Co's home entertainment system. Thus, Software Toolworks ensures participation - with about 50 other software publishers worldwide - in an anticipated Nintendo home video-game boom. Software Toolworks already is doing well: the company's stock is trading at about $25 a share, which is almost four times higher than its share price two years ago, and on Fri, Mar 16 1990, Software Toolworks announced a 2-for-1 stock split; and profits are up, with net income likely to exceed analysts' 70-cent-a-share forecast for fiscal 1990, ending Mar 31. Software Toolworks Chmn and CEO Leslie Crane says he is convinced that the Nintendo home entertainment system, unlike the Atari phenomenon, is here to stay.

Interactive video means jet set need never come down to Earth
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines introduces an innovative in-flight communication system called Worldlink. Northwest describes Worldlink as an 'interactive passenger entertainment system.' Using video screens attached to the seats in front of them, travelers will be able to select movies, play video games or accomplish interactive transactions via computerized connections with the ground. The system will even allow passengers to do shopping or to pre-process their passports. Users will choose the options they want from touch-sensitive video monitors. Northwest plans to start installing Worldlink on Boeing 747s in mid-1992. The company expects to have all 42 of its jumbo jets equipped with Worldlink by the end of the year.
