The Institutional Revolutionary Party sufferred its biggest blow when it lost all major posts in Jalisco, Mexico, to the National Action Party. The defeat was interpreted as a loss of confidence in Pres. Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon's and his mismanagement of the Mexican currency crises.
