Mind what you say; they're listening
Article Abstract:
Eavesdropping - both corporate and private - is increasing, and surveillance technologies are proliferating. Janlori Goldman, representing the American Civil Liberties Union, says: 'Our expectation of confidentiality is being eroded.' Companies say that monitoring employee phone conversations is both legal and necessary, citing the need to gauge productivity and ensure good service. The Communications Workers of America opposes such practices, noting that supervisors now listen in to an estimated 400 million calls each year. How much eavesdropping is being done by individuals is harder to know, but electronic devices to accomplish spying are now easy to obtain (the article includes brief descriptions of several such devices). Lawmakers at both the state and the national level are concerned and are considering legislation.

Thermal Transfer Printers: Will They Dominate the Microcomputer Printer Market?
Article Abstract:
According to an International Resource Development Inc. report titled Microcomputer Printers, the market dominance of impact matrix printers will erode during the 1990s. In 1983 impact matrix shipments constituted seventy-two per cent of all micro printer shipments; by 1993, that figure will plummet to twenty per cent. The reason for the expected decline is that impact printers have lost their price advantage over fully formed character printers. In addition, new technologies like thermal transfer printers, offer attractive benefits, including the capability to use ordinary paper, print at high speeds, and produce excellent color graphics and near letter-quality text. The report costs $1,650.
