Mining moves to meet a looming shortage of the right stuff

The Minerals Council of Australia is recommending that the minerals industry make drastic changes to keep up with the industry's graduate demand. Those companies that are small and less efficient should be shut, and those left should become part of a national network, creating a minerals resources school, according to the council. The council also recommends that the industry, the academic world and government should work closer together.

Woodside on the verge of bonanza
Article Abstract:
Successful exploration efforts have dramatically increased Woodside Offshore Petroleum Pty Ltd's gas reserves in Australia's North-West Shelf, and the company plans to double its liquefied natural gas production in just over five years' time. Woodside exports all of its LNG, and exports accounted for A$291 million of the company's 1996 revenues. Information on other Australian Export Award finalists is included.

Rio Tinto chief spells out why diversity needs to be kept intact

Leon Davis, chief executive of Rio Tinto, believes that the company should make diversification a strength. However, investors do not favor diversified resources companies because it can create bad management. Davis argues that diversification adds value to the company and makes the whole more valuable than the sum of its parts.
