Amazon.com Inc. has developed a new online service called zShops, which offers merchants an opportunity to offer up to 3000 products on Amazon's Web site. Amazon charges $9.99 a month for the service, plus 1.25-5% of sales. zShops has an inventory of 19 million items with 500,000 products offered online. Amazon.com, in its attempt to widen offerings, has yet to show a profit. Investors value the company at $28 billion.

Cable Internet-access flop is far from finished

Excite@Home used to have the exclusive right to sell Internet access over cable-television networks in the United States. Although the company lost this exclusive right in 1999, it is adding thousands of subscribers and generating a large increase in its revenue.
