Netscape battles takeover talk and shrinking sales
Article Abstract:
Netscape faces a long and difficult transition to overcome recent setbacks, according to analysts. Investors should examine four key areas necessary for a Netscape turnaround: stabilization or a gain in Netscape's approximately 60% browser market share; PC makers or ISPs that announce the use of Netscape Navigator as their preferred browser; strong improvement in Netscape's core business of selling server software to large corporations; and a return to profitability. The Internet pioneer is facing a serious World Wide Web browser challenge from Microsoft, which holds a 35% share and is gaining fast. Netscape will not regain profitability until the 3rd qtr 1998, according to BT Alex. Brown. The company's overall 1998 losses will amount to $3 million on sales of about $573 million. The 1999 performance will attain only $30 million in profits on sales of $718 million.
