New Faces of 1984
Article Abstract:
Ten new companies which made the 'Inc.' list of the 100 fastest growing small public companies are outlined. Endevco is a small company in a big industry, (natural gas producing and transporting), which has used its size to remain flexible and is using marketing as a tool to reach potential customers Continental Health Affiliates Inc. is capitalizing on an expanding market, home health care, to create its business. Jeffrey Martin Inc. does not manufacture any of its own products, but it does a good job of successfully marketing the often undermarketed products of others. Not all biotechnological products are related to the medical industry, and Genex Corp. has made a success for itself by concentrating on the more mundane biotech products. A process which converts hazardous wastes so that of the toxic elements became a solid and did not threaten to pollute the ground and water supply has made Chemfix Technologies Inc. very successful. By taking old industrial underachievers and turning them around, J.P. Industries Inc. has found itself a successful business idea. Kaypro Corp. has made a name for itself in the computer industry by undercutting the competition, through its unique marketing strategies, and by the unique way it runs its company. Compu-U-Card International has had ten years in the red, but hopes that 1984 will be the year that shopping at home by computer really catches on. The Home Depot Inc. is based on the concept that people are willing to remodel rather than buy a new house, and it has turned this idea into a chain of stores which will one day be based nationwide. Byers Communications Systems concentrates on three areas within the communications industry, and has the necessary expertise to switch profitably from one to another at any time.

Steven Jobs of Apple Computer: The Missionary of Micros
Article Abstract:
Steven Jobs and his company, Apple Computer first captured the attention of the world with the Apple II micro computer, and that event started a whole new revolution in the home computer industry. This eventually led to IBM entering and dominating the market with their own personal computer in 1981. Now, in 1984, Jobs and his company are fighting back with the introduction of the Macintosh. Perhaps, even more important than the actual events which have occurred, is the profile of the man behind them. When steven Jobs built his first computer, it was done with spare parts in his garage. But his entrepreneurial spirit, and his persuasive personality have combined to create a whole new industry and make Apple a big company with almost one hundred million dollars in sales. It is this spirit and drive, as much as the technology he developed, which may be Steven Jobs' biggest contribution.

Roses Are Blue
Article Abstract:
Wisconsin florist Al Felly tried to obtain trademark rights to the phone number 1-800-FLOWERS, but he was denied those rights by a federal judge in 1983, eleven years after he had first filed. The phone number now belongs to a group of venture capitalists with no experience in the flower business. The ruling judge cited Felly's lack of a cohesive plan of action as the basis for his decision, and Felly, facing high legal fees, has no plans at this time to appeal the decision.
