New firm survival: institutional explanations for new franchisor mortality
Article Abstract:
A sociological explanation for business survival and failure was investigated. Traditionally, economists have asserted that the success of new firms is determined by the efficiency of their production processes and their organizational designs. However, sociologists have described that view as being undersocialized, positing instead that new firm success rests not only economic efficiency but also on institutional legitimacy. In this light, this study analyzed data on 1,292 new business format franchisors launched between 1979 and 1996 to explore if institutional theory indeed contributes to the economic explanations for the survival of new businesses. Findings supported the view that institutional theory improves on economic explanations for new franchisor survival. The study also showed the relevance of certification in a multi-industry context in survival.

Cultural influences on national rates of innovation
Article Abstract:
Cultural values as a factor affecting the rate of innovation is established. Analysis of the per capita rates of innovation of 33 countries in 1975 and 1980 indicate that nations whose people are individualistic, low in power distance and high in uncertainty acceptance experience high rates of innovation. An explanation for this effect is offered by institutional theory which maintains that organizations are influenced by the societies in which they operate.
