Nike's enthusiastic new campaign draws some criticism from New York Marathon officials
Article Abstract:
Nike's four year contract with the New York Road Runners Club for sponsorship of the New York City Marathon expired this year. Neither side could agree on renewing, so the new official shoe sponsor is Asics Tiger, who paid $ 1 mil for the privilege. Nike, however, plans to post signboard-wearing 'prophets' and 'swoosh' hat-wearing choirs along the race route, in a theme that plays on the fanaticism of long distance runners. Marathon organizers face a tough battle to limit the appearance of non-sponsor advertising along the public streets of New York City.
