Northwest affiliate agrees to comply with US order to reinstate service

Express Airlines I, a commuter affiliate of Northwest Airlines, has announced that it will reinstate air service to five small cities in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota in compliance with an order from the US Department of Transportation. Mesaba Airlines, another Northwest commuter affiliate, also said that it will reinstate service to thirteen small cities to avoid a federal lawsuit. Northwest has said that it will assist its affiliates with reservations, ticketing and other ground services.

Minneapolis, MN-based family-owned charter carrier Sun Country Airlines received an unexpected windfall when its cross-airport rival, giant Northwest Airlines, was grounded by a pilots' strike. Sun Country was there to pick up some of the slack from anxious travelers when Northwes,t with 80% of the Minneapolis traffic, was grounded. Customers were impressed with the punctuality and inexpensiveness of cross-country flights and the fact that the airline provided a meal.

UAL girds for vote on unionization of ticket agents
Article Abstract:
Some 19,200 nonunion customer-service and reservations agents at United Airlines will complete the voting on representation by the International Association of Machinists (IAM) union on July 17, 1998. The agents are voting on whether or not they want to be represented by the IAM. If the agents vote in favor of IAM representation, it would be the biggest victory for a union in US airline history.
