The cultural change in Victorian industry, which includes the national push by manufacturing unions for 4-5 percent a year pay rise, a trust fund for worker entitlements is largely subdued. These changes reflect the willingness of the line and human resource managers to embrace new ways of handling workplace relations.

Issues raised by the collapse of Australia's HIH Insurance are discussed. It is argued that the firm's demise can be attributed to the shortcomings of the legislative structure relating to general insurance and to the reduced role of actuaries in this sector.
